Glossary

  • Antennae: pair of sensory structures on the head of invertebrates.
  • Carapace: the top shell of a turtle. In arthropods (insects, crabs etc), the fused head and thorax (the part of the body located near the head) also known as ‘cephalothorax’.
  • Nocturnal: active at night.
  • Omnivore: an organism that feeds on both plants and animals.
  • Spermatophore: gelatinous jelly cone with a sperm cap deposited by a male during courtship and picked up by the cloacal lips of the female.
