There are five subspecies: Damaliscus lunatus jimela (topi), Damaliscus lunatus lunatus (tsessebe), Damaliscus lunatus topi (coastal topi) are all classified as Lower Risk / Conservation Dependent (LR/cd), Damaliscus lunatus korrigum (korrigum) is classified as Vulnerable (VU), and Damaliscus lunatus tiang (tiang) is classified as Lower Risk / Near Threatened (LR/nt) (1).
