Glossary

  • Carapace: the top shell of a turtle. In arthropods (insects, crabs etc), the fused head and thorax (the part of the body located near the head) also known as ‘cephalothorax’.
  • Cloacal: relating to the cloaca,a common cavity into which the reproductive, alimentary and urinary systems open.
  • Deciduous: a plant that sheds its leaves at the end of the growing season.
  • Omnivorous: feeding on both plants and animals.
  • Plastron: in reptiles, the lower shell of a turtle.
  • Scute: a large, bony plate or scale on the upper or lower shell of a turtle or tortoise.
