Popular snake species

Although the western diamond-backed rattle snake is best known for its rattle, the young are not actually born with a rattle, and instead acquire a new segment each time they shed their skin.

An ambush predator which feeds on small mammals, birds and lizards, the western diamond-backed rattle snake will lay in wait in a burrow or run. This snake quickly despatches prey with its toxic venom which also helps to digest its catch, breaking down the animal's skin and internal organs.
