Popular snake species

The Critically Endangered Antiguan racer is now thought to be one of the rarest snakes in the world since rats and the small Indian mongoose were introduced into its habitat, almost driving this species to extinction.

A small population was rediscovered on Great Bird Island in 1989, but despite this rediscovery the population there continued to dwindle until just 60 individuals remained in 1995. Thankfully, a rat and mongoose eradication programme has since helped to safeguard this species.
