ARKive has won a major communication award, beating strong commercial competition from BT Online, John Lewis, Rough Guides, Tesco, Unilever, Vodafone 3G Mobile and Waitrose to win top prize at the IVCA Biz-Net Awards held in London last week.
The International Visual Communication Association (IVCA) works to promote ethical and effective business and public sector communications, and the IVCA Biz-Net Awards are the UK's Premier Internet Business Communication Awards. Fellows of the IVCA include Sir Trevor McDonald, Bob Geldof, Sue MacGregor and Ridley Scott.
ARKive collected two awards, the class winner in the Knowledge category and the overall Grand Prix Award. Judged by a panel of interactive media and communication experts from around the world, the Chair of the Jury said: “The ARKive site was clear in its business objectives and delivered on them in some style. The judges were impressed with its overall look and feel, found it easy to navigate through and felt that it scored highly on usability. Above all, it added value to those site visitors it set out to attract".
ARKive was launched in May 2003 by its patron, Sir David Attenborough and is fast becoming known as the Noah’s Ark of the 21st century because of its pioneering work to provide the world’s first digital bank of films, photographs and sound recordings of endangered species. ARKive has so far created species profiles for 1500 species which includes 10,000 still images and around 50 hours worth of movies – all freely accessible via its website www.arkive.org.
ARKive Director Richard Edwards said:“We are thrilled to have won such prestigious awards from the Business Communication sector. One of ARKive's chief aims was to ensure that it could be used by everyone, from children to scientists. Winning these IVCA awards is a significant endorsement of the effectiveness of ARKive as a communication tool.”
