The Persian sturgeon is classified as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List (1) and listed on Appendix II of CITES (2). Two different populations are recognised by the IUCN Red List: Acipenser persicus (Black Sea stock) is classified as Endangered (EN) and Acipenser persicus (Caspian Sea stock) is classified as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List (1).
