Dick Emery OBE greets the Lord Mayor of Bristol at the 2008 Wildscreen Festival.

Dick Emery, Wildscreen's Chairman since January 2007, has received an OBE in the Queen's New Year honours. The recognition is for services to broadcasting and charity.

Dick helped transform UKTV into a 10-channel network making a profit of more than £50 million a year before he retired as chief executive in 2006. He said: "It was a lovely surprise. I feel very honoured".

Although no longer working in the broadcast industry, Dick continues to work with Wildscreen, a charity dedicated to promoting conservation through wildlife imagery. Much of Wildscreen's work involves gathering wildlife photographs and film footage from private collections and broadcasters, which it uses to educate through its innovative initiatives:

  • ARKive - an award-winning website with multimedia profiles of the worlds threatened plants and animals, freely available online at http://www.arkive.org
  • Wildscreen Festival - the leading event for the wildlife and environmental film industry, established over 25 years ago in Bristol, which brings together delegates for a week of film screenings, workshops and business opportunities.
  • WildPhotos - an annual photography symposium for photographers both professional and amateur, which brings together the worlds finest nature and wildlife photographers for two days of presentations and debate.
  • WildFilmHistory - a website covering 100 years of wildlife filmmaking through film clips, photographs and unique interviews with the greatest names in the industry. http://www.wildfilmhistory.org

Harriet Nimmo, Wildscreen's CEO, said: "This is a wonderful start to 2009 - a year in which Wildscreen will be delivering another significant outreach programme in India and Sri Lanka with the British Council, expanding its new office in Washington DC and building on its exciting partnerships with the Environment Agency in Abu Dhabi and Google Earth".

Dick brings a wealth of experience from the broadcasting industry to Wildscreen and continues to work with the organisation to raise awareness about the plight of the natural world and the need to conserve it.
