The greater slow loris is arguably the only venomous primate, secreting a toxic sweat from its elbows, which it transfers to its mouth by licking. Mainly solitary, the greater slow loris marks trees with urine to avoid direct conflict with other individuals. This is done by urinating on its hands and wiping it onto tree trunks and branches. Leafy seadragons are exquisitely camouflaged fish. As their name suggests, there are a number of leaf-like appendages along the body, which help to make these fish resemble the seaweed of their habitat. The sluggish Lake Titicaca frog dwells on the bottom of Lake Titicaca. Although they have very small lungs they have evolved to take in oxygen directly from the water through their semipermeable skin, which acts like gills. Amongst the largest freshwater turtles in the world, the alligator snapping turtle is a prehistoric-looking species with a reputation as the ‘dinosaur of the turtle world'. It has an unusual way of luring prey: the tongue contains a small, pink, worm-like projection (lure), which when wriggled attracts prey into the turtle's mouth. The large and attractive high brown fritillary is an early love affair of mine and the reason I now live on Dartmoor. This endangered species requires warm, sunny, bracken-covered slopes with an abundant population of violets, the caterpillars' food plant, for egg-laying.
