Magnolia rzedowskiana was first described as a new species in 2015 (1) following its discovery on the Arkive website by Dr José Antonio Vázquez, a botanist at the University of Guadalajara (1).

Magnolia rzedowskiana is found in the cloud forests of Sierra Gorda, Querétaro, Sierra de Xilitla, San Luis Potosí, and vicinity of Chapulhuacán, Hidalgo in Mexico (1).
