  • Porcupine hair is highly modified to form layers of spines known as quills.
  • When threatened the Indian crested porcupine raises its quills and will rattle the hollow spines on its tail.
  • Considered agricultural pests by locals, Indian crested porcupines are trapped and used for food.
  • Porcupine quills form a great defence mechanism - when threatened the porcupine will utilise its sharp spines by attacking backwards.
