Hawaiian hawk (Buteo solitarius)
- The Hawaiian hawk is the only extant speices of native hawk on Hawaii
- In traditional Hawaiian culture the the Hawaiian hawk is known as the 'io ("eeeh-oh") and is considered an “‘aumakua” or family God, making harming or killing this species taboo
- The Hawaiian hawk's natural prey are other birds native to Hawaii, but it currently preys primarily on introduced speices
Classified as Near Threatened (NT) on the IUCN Red List (1) and listed on Appendix II of CITES (2).
