Indian Ocean islands
Christmas Island is an Australian territory located close to the Indonesian island of Java. One of the most spectacular events on Christmas Island is the migration of the Christmas Island red crabs.
When the wet season arrives, the population of about 120 million crabs migrate en masse from their forest habitat to their seaside breeding grounds to lay their eggs. The eggs then hatch and a month later millions of tiny young crabs make the journey back to the forests.
