Indian Ocean islands

Destroyed rainforest - prime gibbon habitat

Java & Sumatra

The Indonesian islands of Java and Sumatra lie to the east of the Indian Ocean.

The western Java mountain forests boast a rich variety of flora and fauna, with many endemic mammal species, and still hold many species which are now extinct from other areas of Java.

However, only five percent of the original habitat remains in this area, with soil erosion and fires threatening the remaining fragments.
