Glossary
Co-operative breeders: in birds, species in which three or more individuals contribute towards raising a single brood at a single nest site. Non-parental helpers at the nest assist with the feeding and raising of young birds.
Incubation: the act of incubating eggs, that is, keeping them warm so that development is possible.
Larvae: stage in an animal’s lifecycle after it hatches from the egg. Larvae are typically very different in appearance to adults; they are able to feed and move around but usually are unable to reproduce.
Riparian: relating to the banks of watercourses.
Territory: an area occupied and defended by an animal, a pair of animals or a colony.
Wattle: a fleshy organ that hangs from the bill, throat or eye of some bird species.
