Ocean acidification

The enormous amount of carbon dioxide produced by the combustion of fossil fuels is not only contributing to climate change, but its uptake into the ocean is making the water more acidic, in a process known as ocean acidification. The rising acidity levels are causing many ecological problems in the marine ecosystem, which could eventually cause a mass extinction of thousands of coral, mammal, fish and invertebrate species.
