- The crested duck is native to South America.
- This bird has two subspecies: the Patagonian crested duck (L. s. specularioides) and Andean crested duck (L. s. alticola).
- The Patagonian crested duck has red eyes and is smaller in size then the Andean crested duck, which has yellow-orange eyes.
Classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List (1).
