Classified as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List (1) and listed on Appendix II of CITES (2). The Black Sea and Caspian Sea stocks are listed as Endangered (EN), the River Danube subpopulation is listed as Critically Endangered (CR) and the Aral Sea stock is listed as Extinct (EX) on the IUCN Red List (1).
